Manchester United are weighing up a move for South American sensation, Joao Gomes, but the player reportedly prefers a transfer to Premier League rivals Liverpool.
The Red Devils are willing to spend £32 million to sign the youngster, according to Brazilian news outlet Coluna do Fla, but the player may need some serious convincing to join them.
The article claims that United has been following the 21-year-old for some time now and have scouted him on multiple occasions, but the youngster himself has said that joining Jurgen Klopp and the Reds’ is his “greatest desire.”
Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Gomes said: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play”
“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
It’s not the first time this summer that United has had trouble luring players to their team; in fact, it’s been said that their top transfer target, Frenkie De Jong, would rather join Chelsea than move to Manchester.
Liverpool supporters will be excited by the young man’s desire to play for Liverpool, especially given the fact that he is a midfielder.
The Reds’ midfield is currently in a tenuous situation with most of the players covering those positions getting older.
Fabinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain will be joining Milner and Henderson who are already in their 30s next year.
Additionally, Thiago will be out for up to six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s lackluster performance against newly promoted Fulham.
Even though the middle of the field needs to be rebuilt, Klopp is more interested in finding a player who can step right in than a rough diamond who needs to be eased into the Premier League, therefore making a move for Joao Gomes this summer highly improbable.
