In light of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pre-season hamstring injury which could see him out of action for about 2-3 months, it is said that Liverpool are keeping an eye on Inter Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu.
As the summer transfer window enters its final month, Premier League giants Liverpool, are reportedly interested in the 28-year-old playmaker.
The Turkish international made the switch from Serie A rivals AC Milan to the Nerazzurri last summer, and he quickly became a regular in Simone Inzaghi’s squad. Calhanoglu is a well-experienced player who is skilled at taking set pieces and can also function as a playmaker.
Although Jurgen Klopp has assembled an excellent team at Liverpool, he will need to reinvent his midfield roster. James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, and Jordan Henderson are all in their 30s and will eventually need to be replaced.
Also in the team are Naby Keita, Fabinho, and Curtis Jones, giving Klopp strength in depth. The Reds’ unsuccessful pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni is evidence that they are in need of a midfielder. However, early this summer, Klopp had said that no midfield acquisitions will be made this summer.
However, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pre-season hamstring injury may just change the Liverpool manager’s mind on that. The Englishman has not enjoyed good luck in Merseyside and his contract with the club expires in just under a year.
The Reds might use a middle of the park addition with Tyler Morton likely joining Blackburn Rovers on loan. Calhanoglu will provide Liverpool a player who has been proven at the highest level and also has the experience.
The Liverpool midfield has primarily served as a supporting cast to their strong defense and fluid attack. Thiago’s addition provided them a new dimension that can be amplified further should the Serie A player show up at Anfield.
Liverpool have a quick frontline that often tries to get beyond the defense of the opposition. With Calhanoglu, Klopp’s overlap tactics will be strengthened because of his vision and passing prowess. Additionally, it can also divide the efforts of the opposing teams in marking Thiago, giving the Spaniard more room to maneuver.
The 28-year-old, will provide Jurgen Klopp with an alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold in set-piece as he is also an excellent set-piece taker. The Anfield outfit finally have a proper number nine in Darwin Nunez. Along with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, the Uruguayan could profit from Calhanoglu’s prowess with the dead ball.
Liverpool proved they mean business after defeating Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Community Shield on Saturday. Calhanoglu’s addition will be an excellent way to cap off Anfield’s solid summer of recruitment.
