Liverpool have quietly confirmed another shirt number change in the dressing room for next season

With the official signing of Fabio Carvalho, who will wear No. 28, the club has quietly announced another adjustment in the first-team squad’s jersey number.

On Sunday morning, Carvalho was officially introduced as a Liverpool player, keeping his promise to Fulham’s kit man Tommy Fuller that he would retain the No. 28.

Why change it, I’ve done well with that number, he said. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” they say.

With Harvey Elliott swapping the No. 67 for the No. 19 on Saturday, it was the second update to the squad numbers at Anfield this weekend, and a third followed shortly after.

After all, the No. 28 was already taken.

After moving from Preston for $500,000 in 2021, Ben Davies registered with the number, joining the likes of Steven Gerrard and Danny Ings in doing so.

However, Liverpool has confirmed that Davies is now officially bound to wear the No. 24 jersey after giving up his old jersey number so that Carvalho could wear it.

The No. 24 jersey has been vacant since Rhian Brewster’s departure for Sheffield United in 2020, and it has previously been worn by Joe Allen, David N’Gog, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, and Danny Murphy.

It is unlikely that Davies will ever wear it on the field, of course, as Liverpool are willing to consider offers for a center-back who hasn’t yet played for the team in a competitive match.

Early in the transfer window, Celtic and Middlesbrough showed interest in Davies, who spent the 2021–2022 season on loan at Sheffield United.

Liverpool currently values the 26-year-old for roughly £4 million.
