Liverpool have been linked with a move for Marco Asensio throughout the summer transfer window, and now there is a new development regarding the player’s future.
What’s the latest?
Jorge Mendes have offered Liverpool the chance to sign the 26-year-old according to Spanish news outlet, Mundo Deportivo.
The Real Madrid attacker, who is in the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu, has reportedly been offered to a number of clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
However, the report also goes ahead to confirm that Asensio has not yet received any official offer despite that.
Imagine him & Nunez
With Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and recent signing Darwin Nunez making up the new-look front three at Anfield, there is no denying that Liverpool already has a very good forward line. Asensio might be a tremendous addition to the offensive ranks in the upcoming weeks though, given how many players left over the summer.
The Merseyside giants sold Divock Origi, Sadio Mane, and Taki Minamino during the summer window, so Mendes’ offer might be a great chance to strengthen the Reds’ attacking third as they attempt to compete for multiple trophies once more this season.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2016, Asensio has enjoyed a very successful career, also playing a part in winning three Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, and three UEFA Super Cups.
While the Spaniard hasn’t always been a starter for the Los Blancos, he has consistently delivered when asked to make a difference on the field, scoring 49 goals and providing 24 assists in 235 games.
Since Salah has now extended his stay at Liverpool until 2025 and Luis Diaz joining the team earlier this year before Nunez, it seems doubtful that Asensio will be given a first-team role at Anfield. However, because of his flexibility in placement, Jurgen Klopp may find great value in him.
Real Madrid legend Guti once referred to the £25.8 million star as having the “future at his feet” and has ample experience playing in both the left and right wing positions and in attacking midfield, so the Liverpool manager would be bringing in a player who can cover a number of positions should it be necessary.
He could be the perfect player to join the Reds’ forward line in order to bring out the best in young Nunez due to his winning mentality that he developed over the course of the last six years at Real Madrid, along with his experience playing alongside elite center-forwards like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.
After being dismissed on Monday night following an incident with Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen, the 23-year-old hasn’t exactly had the best start to his Reds career. It would be great to have an experienced player like Asensio come in and work with the youngster alongside the other forwards in the team to help the Uruguayan fulfill his potential on Merseyside.
Signing the Spaniard would be a major coup for Liverpool, but given the injury crisis in the middle of the field, it may be a deal that is put on hold while the club turns its attention to prospective midfield reinforcements in the next two weeks of the transfer season.
