After securing a new long-term contract for Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s Naby Keita could be next to sign a new deal at the club.

Under Jurgen Klopp, the Guinean international has struggled to hold down a place in the first-team, but a new contract is imminent.

Keita, who was seen as injury-prone, played 40 times across all competitions in what was maybe his best season at the club since joining in 2018.

If he hadn’t competed in the African Cup of Nations, that sum would have been significantly higher.

New Deal Soon?

The club runs the risk of losing the vivacious midfielder for nothing as Keita, 27, enters the final year of his contract, which expires next summer.

The Athletic’s chief Liverpool reporter, James Pearce, broke the news that the club are ready to offer a new deal.

“For Keita, it was again another stop-start year. The Guinean international made some vital contributions, especially in the second half of the season, but was only able to make a brief appearance off the bench during the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid,” Pearce claimed.

Although Keita played more Premier League minutes in 2021–22 than any other season since 2018–19, that only represents 34.3% of the club’s total minutes played. He started 14 top-flight games. If not for the Africa Cup of Nations, that number would have been a little higher.

“Liverpool are currently working to reach an agreement on a new deal with Keita, whose current contract expires next summer.

The 27-year-old is still struggling to consistently live up to his £52.75 million transfer fee, but Klopp still has faith in him.

Given that Thiago, Henderson, and James Milner represent the team’s aging midfield, Liverpool appears to feel Keita can play a significant role.

It would be great to see how well he partners with new signing, Darwin Nunez, as there are no doubts to what Keita is capable of doing when in-form.

There will always be concerns about Keita’s consistency and injury history, but there is undoubtedly much to build off from the 2021–2022 season.
