Liverpool centre-back, Joe Gomez says he was flattered by Real Madrid transfer rumors, but that after agreeing to a new contract with the Reds earlier last week, that was never his top concern.
The defender extended his contract before the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia in Thailand and Singapore, and he will stay at Anfield till 2027.
Gomez first joined the Merseyside Reds back when Brendan Rodgers, Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor, was in charge and played in his first few matches as a left-back.
Since then, he has mainly played as a defender, and he played in 28 games for the side that won the Premier League championship in 2020.
Before agreeing to a new contract with Liverpool, the 25-year-old defender was rumored to be joining Real Madrid.
He told the Liverpool ECHO: “I can’t deny that I heard about these rumors, but until things are concrete with my representatives, I treat it all with a pinch of salt.”
‘Any interest is flattering.
But I don’t actually think it’s all that distracting because, until I decide, the outside noise is just that: ‘outside’. My signing demonstrates that I recognize the challenge and wish to rise to it after I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do.
Gomez has displayed focus and commitment to the club and Jurgen Klopp’s reactions didn’t give anything less of a confirmation to that.
Jurgen Klopp couldn’t be more happier about the defender’s future either.
Klopp said: “As a club, we have had a lot of really good news, and this is more of it.
“Joe is a gifted individual. He is an outstanding human being as well as an outstanding defender. Knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a huge boost that everyone who loves Liverpool FC and cares about its present and future should be incredibly happy about. He has so many great qualities that I could talk about them all day.
