Due to an injury issue at the club, Liverpool are in serious need of midfield reinforcements this summer and a new potential target has been identified with only few days left to complete a deal.
What’s the latest?
Liverpool are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Leandro Paredes, according to TNT Argentina (via TNT Sports).
Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen to bring in a new midfielder before the transfer window closes, but the Merseysiders will face competition from Juventus for the player’s services.
With two draws and a disappointing defeat at Old Trafford on Monday night, Liverpool are currently one of just five teams in the top flight that have failed to pick up their first three points of the season as they’re currently winless in the Premier League.
There are many things about the team’s current form to criticize, but none more so than the obvious injury situation in the middle of the field, where Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, and Naby Keita are all now recovering from various fitness issues.
For this reason, the Reds’ signing of Paredes couldn’t have come at a better time. He could not only be the ideal Thiago replacement while the Spaniard recovers from an ongoing hamstring problem, but he could also challenge the current midfielders for their positions even after Thiago’s return.
The 28-year-old is predominantly a deep defensive midfielder but has displayed many attacking-minded attributes over his time with the Ligue One Champions and as a result could comfortably cover the position needed during the Liverpool midfielder’s absence.
In 22 games last season, Paredes scored one goal and provided two assists while averaging 68.1 touches, 1.5 tackles, and an impressive 96% pass completion rate. He also made one dribble attempt per game and successfully completed 86% of them.
The fact that the Argentine has no trouble controlling play from deep and could certainly work with Fabinho to improve control in the midfield at Anfield is further evidenced by the fact that he ranks in the top 1% of his positional peers in the top five European leagues for pass completion and the top 11% for progressive passes.
The talented star who has a price tag of just £17m this summer, is no stranger to high praise with former PSG midfielder Fabrice Pancrate hailing Paredes “super” and “perfect” in an interview:
“I have always said that I found this player to be super strong.
“He’s smart, technical, aggressive in a good way, and he’s not just a nasty gamer. It is also beautiful to watch. His tempo is perfect.”
In light of this, the signing of Paredes may present Klopp with a great opportunity to add some extra depth in Thiago’s position while also providing Fabinho some competition for playing time in the season ahead.
