Seven players have already been shown the exit door at Anfield as part of Liverpool’s massive clear-out this summer, and a new update has confirmed the likelihood of an eighth.
What’s the latest?
James Pearce of The Athletic reports that the Merseyside club has agreed to sell Neco Williams to Nottingham Forest this summer after initially rejecting a proposal.
As per the report, written for The Athletic, Pearce details that Liverpool will earn a fee worth close to £17m for the Welshman, and were happy to make the sale following their signing of Calvin Ramsay last month.
Supporters will be delighted
Williams has spent his entire career with the club since he joined the U9s, so it will be bittersweet for the Anfield faithful to see him leave. However, supporters will undoubtedly be happy that Williams is finally moving on to a club where he can play regular first-team football.
The 21-year-old has made 33 appearances for the Merseysiders, contributing six assists along the way, but has never been able to establish himself as a regular starter in the first team due to stiff competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who former Brazil captain Cafu called “one of the best right-backs in the world.”
Williams has, however, had the chance to demonstrate his talent and value after being sent on loan to Fulham in the second half of last season, where he made 14 appearances and contributed two goals and two assists, playing a key role in the right-back position to help the London club secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Williams, who has 20 caps for Wales and helped them qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years, has recently shown he is more than capable of being a valuable asset at the club level. Williams will undoubtedly be traveling to Qatar with the team.
The transfer appears to be in the best interests of both the player and the club going forward, however Julian Ward has secured a fantastic deal to sell Williams with £17m banked if the deal does go through over the next few days. Williams will also now have the opportunity to shine with Forest.
