According to the Corriere Dello Sport, AC Milan are keen to tie down Ismael Bennacer to a new contract in order to ward off interest from Liverpool.
The Italian newspaper claims that the former Arsenal academy graduate is “in the Reds’ crosshairs,” so the Rossoneri are pushing forward with their plans to “lock down” the player.
The release clause on Bennacer is believed to be over €50 million (£42 million), which has likely piqued the interest of Liverpool’s sporting director Julian Ward.
If the Algerian international signs a contract extension, the sum is likely to be doubled, so the Merseyside club would probably need to move quickly if they want to sign him.
Three of the Reds midfielders are not available for selection due to an injury crisis, but it is believed that there is hesitation about entering the market to bring in a short-term fix.
In order to save money for a major Jude Bellingham bid next summer, Jurgen Klopp’s side may yet again decide against signing Bennacer.
