Ex-Liverpool star Steve McMamanan, has raised doubts about the interest that his former club has in Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.
The Belgian international has been heavily linked with Arsenal this summer but he has been suggested as a target for the Reds, who are looking to strengthen their midfield options. McManaman, though, feels that Jurgen Klopp’s side would already have made a move for the player if they were interested:
“Would Youri Tielemans be a viable option for Liverpool? I don’t know. The only thing is, if you had wanted him, you would have got him now. Can they get him for free in twelve months’ time? I have no idea but for £20m-£25m he’d be available now if that was the case. I presume if Liverpool had wanted him they would have taken him.”
It’s difficult to understand Tielemans’ situation. Given his contract situation, as McManaman points out, Leicester are not exactly asking for a huge sum for the 25-year-old player. Yet every high-profile English club, including Liverpool, appears to be steering clear of him.
The midfielder did experience a significant decline in performance last season, which may be part of the reasons why teams’ are reluctant to make a move for him. However, given the number of clubs that would be competing to sign him for free next year, it would seem that the risk is worthwhile given his low asking price.
