Chelsea wantaway forward, Timo Werner, should have joined Liverpool instead of the London club according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
After a successful stint with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, Werner was one of Europe’s hottest assets at the time before Frank Lampard persuaded him two years ago to join his squad at Chelsea.
The German was touted to join Liverpool to play under his countryman Jurgen Klopp, but finally decided against it due to the appeal of London life and a big salary to match.
Werner now appears to be looking for a way out of Stamford Bridge after failing to win the heart of Thomas Tuchel, who appears to have given up on the German international.
Romano claims that Liverpool’s system would have been a better fit for the German’s style of play in his column for CaughtOffside.
“Werner is a high-level player in my opinion, but he needs a different playing style to shine. Because of this, I believe a move to Liverpool would have allowed him to reach his full potential.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke to the player at the time, but there were no direct discussions between the Reds and RB Leipzig. Unfortunately, Chelsea were quicker at the time.
Romano’s claims are difficult to argue with seeing how Timo’s time at Chelsea played out. Nevertheless, Reds supporters will likely be pleased their team missed out this time.
