'He has a chance': Jurgen Klopp says injured Liverpool star could be fit to face Man City in two weeks

Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool’s Alisson Becker could be fit to play against Man City in the Community Shield two weeks from now.

Following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Klopp was quoted in The Athletic saying Alisson “has a chance” to play but ruled out Diogo Jota.

Diogo (Jota) doesn’t have a chance to play against City in the Community Shield, said Klopp. Ali (Alisson) does.

We are preparing for the whole season, but with Ali, it’s nothing serious. It’s not just ideal. He can’t do goalie training with it and shouldn’t play in this moment, but he can still do some other things. These things happen. It’s a little issue, but we must be careful.

Bad news for Oxlade-Chamberlain, too

Klopp also provided an update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The 28-year-old suffered an injury during the first-half of the today’s game against Crystal Palace.

The Liverpool manager reacted to the injury by saying he “didn’t know” how serious Ox’s problem was.

For him and for us, it’s very disappointing, he added. “Ox trains very well all the time and looked really good. It has happened in the past with Ox when he has had intense periods. We’ve dealt with worse situations; this is just a muscle thing. I have no idea how long it will take exactly. But when he returns, everything will be OK. He is a top class player who can help us.

Worrying news all round

Even though these things happen during pre-season, they are nevertheless concerning. The situation with Liverpool’s goalkeeper is the most worrying.

The Reds have a number of players who feel ‘irreplaceable’ and he’s right at the top of that list. The drop off from Alisson to Caoimhin Kelleher is not as big as it once was, but is still a little too big for comfort.

Simply put, Liverpool cannot afford to start the new campaign without their number one. If doing so requires him to miss the Community Shield on July 30th, so be it.

Without Alisson, it will be more difficult to defeat Manchester City, but it would be preferable to have him fit and ready for the first game of the season one week later.

Jota and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s absence will also be felt. Jota, perhaps more so than Ox, but the midfielder himself had been energetic prior to the injury.

He will be eager to make his mark this season and prove that he isn’t finished just yet at Liverpool. That might now need to wait while he recovers.

So Liverpool had a very mixed day overall. More minutes in the legs is definitely a plus, but Klopp’s biggest concern would have been another injury worry.
