As news of Naby Keita’s unhappiness in Merseyside spread, former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has told Reds manager Jurgen Klopp to sell the midfielder this summer.
Keita has only made 76 Premier League appearances in his five seasons with the club, and he still has one year left on his contract at Anfield.
Klopp has been reluctant to deploy the Guinean international, despite the fact that injuries have been the main cause of this limited game time.
Thus reports from Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed Keita is unhappy at Liverpool.
Contract talks stalled and have now stopped due the 27-year-old’s frustration with his lack of minutes.
Enrique, a Reds player from 2011 to 2016, offered his thoughts on Keita’s situation and gave Klopp advice on what to do with the player.
“If he is not happy, sell him this summer and at least we get some money,” the former Newcastle man wrote on his Instagram story.
“(Manchester) United are looking to pay £80 million for Casemiro. List, United, £40 million (for Keita) half price, younger player.”
Enrique might have a point, given that his contract only has 12 months left. The Merseyside club will not get back any of the £48 million they spent on Keita in 2017 if they don’t sell him now.
Letting go of Keita may provide more opportunities for youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, both of whom have a high ceiling, even though Thiago and Oxlade-Chamberlain are both injured.
It will also help Liverpool convince England international Jude Bellingham to make the switch from Germany to the North West if they open a path for him now since Liverpool is also expected to make a move for the Borussia Dortmund star next summer.
With that said, Keita may play on Monday night when Klopp’s side travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
Another sign that he is already halfway out the door is if the Guinean is left sticking out the side.
