Liverpool has officially announced the departure of 21-year-old defender Rhys Williams.

Liverpool’s defenders under Jurgen Klopp are in fierce competition for positions since Ibrahima Konate joined the team last summer. Williams and Nat Phillips, for example, had had trouble getting into games before his arrival, and it has gotten harder for them over the past year.

Both players spent time on loan away from the club last season and now Williams will once again be leaving the club on a temporary deal, as officially announced by Liverpool.

The 21-year-old will spend the next season with Blackpool, a club not too far from his birthplace, Preston.

The young defender will be trying to gain enough experience to offer him a chance to break into Liverpool’s team next season. At Swansea, where he was most recently on loan, he only made five league appearances, which wasn’t very productive.

Williams needs to play frequently in a tough league to progress, and Blackpool’s proximity to Liverpool should make Williams feel more at home.
