In an official announcement, Porto announced that they had reached an agreement with Arsenal to sell midfielder Fabio Vieira this summer. The Gunners will pay an initial cost of around £30 million, plus £5 million in add-ons, according to the Portuguese team.
Mikel Arteta might make the 22-year-old one of his first signings of the year as he attempts to boost his squad. Last season, the Spaniard led his team to fifth place, just missing out on a return to the Champions League.
Arteta has been given the responsibility of enhancing his options in order to make another push for the top four. “We are going to have some resources, not unlimited resources, some resources,” he said of the summer transfer market.
“And we have to play and do what we have to do, the best we can with the resources we have. We don’t know what the rest of the league will have in terms of resources, which I assume will be difficult because it is no longer a top three or top four league. It is now down to the top eight or ten teams. That is why we must find a method to repeat what we accomplished last summer.”
Vieira appears to be one of the potential options that the manager is considering in order to boost the depth of his squad. Last season, the 22-year-old made 27 league appearances, scoring six goals and assisting 14.
According to A Bola, the deal includes a huge agent fee for Vieira’s agent Jorge Mendes. The report claims that he will be owed 10% of the deal, which is around £3.4 million.
It’s unclear how much the Gunners will have to pay agents for all of their summer signings, but it’s likely to be a large sum.
