According to 90min, Arsenal has joined the hunt to sign highly-rated Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, but they will face tough competition this summer.

In 2016, Chukwuemeka move from the Northampton Town academy to Villa Park, where he has since grown into one of the top young players in British football.

The 18-year-old scored twice in the Three Lions’ victory over Israel in the championship game to help England win the Under-19 European Championship.

Chukwuemeka made 13 appearances last season after breaking into the Villa first team in 2021. He only made two Premier League starts, though, and spent a great deal of his time on the bench.

The teenager, whose contract is coming to an end, has turned down many offers from Aston Villa to sign an extension. Before committing his future, Chukwuemeka is believed to want assurances with regards his chances of making the first team under Steven Gerrard.

The Athletic reports that Chukwuemeka was left out of Villa’s pre-season Australia tour because they are having trouble persuading the midfielder that his development is best served at Villa Park. Many of Europe’s top clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Arsenal is one of the latest clubs to show interest, and the Gunners are prepared to enter the race to sign Chukwuemeka if he becomes available this summer, according to 90min.

Chukwuemeka’s contract expires next summer, and if he doesn’t sign a new one, Villa will only be entitled to about £250,000 in compensation for training him, as per the report.

Therefore, the Villains may decide to cash-in now while they can command a large fee with 90min journalist Graeme Bailey suggesting the Midlands club will demand around £40 million.

Although it is highly implausible that a team like Arsenal would spend that much money on an 18-year-old with less than a year left on his contract, Bailey claims that due to his immense talent, the Gunners might shell out between £20 million and £25 million.

Bailey told The Talking Transfers podcast:

He is currently refusing to sign a new contract. And for that reason, links from Arsenal and Newcastle are coming up. Both clubs consider him as a potential starter for their teams. He’s that talented.

“Someone told me that they would demand more than £40 million for him. Because of his contract situation, they won’t get that. Would a club like Arsenal spend $20–$30 million, though? He is such a great talent, so I believe they probably would.

“In England, within the scouting ranks, he is regarded as one of the best 18-year-olds we’ve seen in a long time.”

Newcastle aren’t the only rival Arsenal would face as reports from 90min confirm that Manchester City, Manchester United, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus are all interested as well.

We’ll have to wait and see how things play out, but it seems like Arsenal are in the race to sign Chukwuemeka. Given the fierce competition for his services, it would be a major accomplishment if they could convince him to move to North London.
