Both Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in signing Lisandro Martinez this summer, and both clubs have already held talks to sign the Ajax defender this summer.
Right now, the game is looking for left-footed center backs to help balance out the build-up play from the back.
Sven Botman is expected to make a significant transfer to Newcastle United, where he will team up with Dan Burn, another left-footed center back.
This shows how in-demand these players are, and Ajax star Martinez suddenly appears to be in the middle of a real tug-of-war.
Arsenal And Manchester United Want Lisandro Martinez
Last week, reports claimed that Arsenal had made a €30 million (£26 million) offer to Ajax to sign Martinez.
However, reports out of the Netherlands at the time stated that Manchester United are interested in Martinez while Arsenal were backing off.
It is clear why Martinez appeals to both teams.
Based on his stint at Ajax, Martinez excellently fits Arsenal’s need for a defender who can play both left-sided center back and left back.
Erik ten Hag, who has been named as United’s new manager, observed Martinez’s growth at Ajax and even praised him as “outstanding.”
Now that Arsenal and United have already spoken with Martinez’s representatives according to The Mirror there may actually be a battle between the two clubs.
Martinez wants to play in the Premier League, and talks with his agents have recently taken place in London.
However, neither team had anticipated paying Ajax’s outrageous fee of £42 million.
This past season, the Argentina international won Ajax’s Player of the Year title, and they obviously expect a hefty fee as a result.
Given that Arsenal would probably view Martinez as a squad player and that paying £42 million would be risky, a move to United looks a little more likely if Ajax keep to that asking price.
Because Arsenal and United are so far from Ajax’s asking price, this transfer saga may continue for some time.
